In this regard, the building facade is treated with two contrasting aesthetics. The ground floor of each facility and some larger volumetric expanses are clad in fiber cement panels, a durable and energy efficient material that incorporates recycled content and is also paintable. These surfaces will serve as a substrate for expressive and thematic murals by local artists that celebrate local food traditions and activism. The second floor facade of each facility is clad in vertically oriented wood siding. Functionally, the sawtooth roof allows daylight to penetrate deep into the Market Hall and formally, it generates a dynamic facade that suggests movement, evoking the architectural legacy of iconic Route 66 motor inns, filling stations and other transportation- centric infrastructure. Texas is a sacred site to the Lipan Apache Tribe. It became the final resting place of Lipan who settled in the immediate vicinity beginning in the 1790s, when the Spanish colonial government named the area a peace settlement. The Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas recently partnered with the Big Bend Conservation Alliance to protect this site with a structure, which would offer protection from residential encroachment while serving three purposes—to prevent erosion of the burial mound, limit trespassing, and teach about the area’s Indigenous history. <img width="1632" height="1056" width_o="1632" height_o="1056" By acquiring privately and publicly-owned land, ILTF will empower Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land since time immemorial to restore its Native habitat, and to reconnect to each other across colonial borders. This initial parcel will serve as the central point where habitat restoration begins. Local Indigenous communities will lead in decision making around prioritization of land acquisition at significant sites and landscape features radiating out from this central point. Repurposed roadways and new pathways will connect these sites as land is acquired and habitat restoration follows. As land is reclaimed and the circle fills out, the site takes on the form of a dreamcatcher, a symbol of solidarity among Indigenous Peoples throughout the Americas. <img width="1376" height="1376" The pressing need to redevelop the northwest corner of the Midtown Campus arises from its unique potential to serve the city’s creative community. The iconic Visual Arts Center (VAC) designed by Ricardo Legorreta, and the historic WWII-era Barracks stand in states of disrepair and disuse. against “24/7”, art critic Jonathan Crary’s shorthand for the nonstop financialization of personal time powered by the attention-based economies of online communication and streaming platforms, round-the-clock cable news, and digital marketing. To some extent, 24/7 can be understood as a unique form of mass somnambulance where digital experiences may occur out-of-step with physical movements. Such technology-induced “sleepwalking” can correspond to sedentary lifestyles that exacerbate global warming by placing overwhelming demands on the energy grid. This was particularly noticeable in 2020 when stay-at-home orders coincided with increased internet usage, further eroding the boundaries between the bed and everything else. 247365 is an off-the-grid, glow-in-the-dark, co-operative housing community sited in Trinidad, Colorado on the abandoned remains of the 1960s counterculture commune Drop City. The proposed social experiment—set in 2030—embraces the limitations of renewable energy technologies by instating daily “green-outs,” or naturally occurring power outages. Bioluminescent infrastructure casts light upon the settlement at nightfall, further reducing energy demand. The project’s design recalls and reconfigures the formal and spatial elements of an asclepion, or ancient healing temple, to support productive and reproductive labor. One can understand 247365 as a media-free refuge for rest and recalibration that attempts to nurture connectivity between people in place and offline. <img width="1224" height="792" width_o="1224" Sited in Milwaukee Junction and anchored by the 536,000 sq ft vacant Fisher Body Plant, the project approaches the redevelopment and adaptive reuse of this former industrial area through urban strategies focused on affordability, biodiversity and social connectivity. Recognizing recent flooding events and the fragility of urban water infrastructure, the landscape design foregrounds stormwater management through a series of hardscape and softscape water collection systems. The ground floor of each building houses a different neighborhood amenity. The use of precast concrete columns and tee beams provides economy at scale and construction efficiency.
